One man’s story of how a horrific injury led to changing the martial arts industry. I started training in Kenpo Karate in 1975, but this was put on hold in 1980 when I was involved in a motorcycle accident that broke my back, left me paralyzed, and forced me to use a wheelchair to get around. Following my accident I thought martial arts were no longer an option. However, an article in a martial arts magazine reintroduced me to Jeet Kune Do and introduced me to the possibility that self-defense could be an option for wheelchair users.
