Why is Everybody Always Yelling?

When a mother first brings her child into a martial arts school, she will sometimes ask, “Why is everybody always yelling?” I like to answer that we are teaching physical, mental, and emotional fitness. On a physical level, yelling does several things. First of all, it tightens the stomach to exercise the mid-section and protect that area in case we are hit. Tightening the stomach muscles also expels air, which increases the power in our punches and kicks. On a separate physical level, yelling exercises our internal organs.
