Karate for Parkinson’s is making waves in the medical and martial arts communities. A recent study shows that teaching patients karate can ease symptoms and improve their daily lives. At Fonseca Martial Arts in Chicago, instructors partnered with neurologists from Rush University Medical Center to create a special program for elderly Parkinson’s patients. This innovative karate for Parkinson’s program included 19 patients in the early-to-middle stages of the disease. Before starting classes, each participant completed physical and cognitive testing. How Karate Improves Parkinson’s Symptoms Over ten weeks, patients attended karate classes twice a week. After the program, researchers reported significant improvements in symptoms such as balance, mobility, posture, and confidence.
