The Art of Teaching: Treating Students Fairly not Equally As a young educator, Grandmaster McCarthy believed (as many do) that fairness meant treating all students equally. Everyone had the same requirements to meet for each belt level, and the path to success seemed straightforward – either you passed or failed the test to earn your rank. Making exceptions seemed like watering down the requirements . . . or possibly favoritism, benefiting students you like over students you don’t like as much. However, as his teaching experience grew, McCarthy realized that this approach didn’t account for the diversity of abilities among students.
