In May of 2021, the Kukkiwon leadership announced its intention to develop a branch of sparring that would be specific to the organization at a rebirth ceremony. Kukkiwon’s intent is to develop a style of sparring that will be fundamentally different from the current Olympic style, in that it will focus on more ‘practical’, real life situations. Taekwondo leaders are excited about the new sparring style because it is intended to be appropriate for students at every level, and empower students with more practical self-defense skills. Grandmaster Dong Sup Lee Leaders from around the world have been providing feedback and input to Kukkiwon, which is very important in this development.
