The fact is that most staff members want to perform but there are four reasons why they don’t:
• They don’t know what they are supposed to do.
• They don’t know how to do it.
• They don’t know why they should do something.

Here are four easy fixes:
1)They don’t know what they are supposed to do-Teach your staff what they are expected to do and invest the time to train them. If a staff member is never told to answer the phone he or she may not answer the phone. If a staff member is told answering the phone is part of their job, he or she will do it.
2)They don’t know how to do it-Teach your staff how to do what is expected of them and invest the time to train your staff. Training in the beginning can save you time and energy later on. If a staff member is answering the phone incorrectly, take the time to train them on how to do it right. Problems won’t magically solve themselves.
3)They don’t know why they should do it– Just like the last two problems this is a training issue. Invest the time to train your staff. Show your staff how every part of their job is important to the organization as a whole. If a staff member doesn’t understand that answering the phone properly can directly affect sales and your school’s income, explain it to them. Your staff will know why they should do something if you communicate the reasons clearly to them.
4)There are obstacles beyond their control-This is different than the other three reasons that can cause failure. Some obstacles your staff can take care of by themselves easily. Some problems are trickier and they might need your assistance.
