I remember an old cartoon from the Far Side that showed an invasion of aliens made of boards and bricks outside a martial arts school, and the caption was something like “This was just the opportunity they had been training for.” An argument could be made that if you are training for self-defense (against humans), why practice breaking boards and bricks? As Bruce Lee famously said, “Boards don’t hit back.” To me, breaking is first and foremost a demonstration of power. It is secondarily a measure of power.
